No experimental data investigating the biodegradation in water of sodium 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate (CAS No. 2702-72-9) were available. This substance is highly soluble and it is rapidly dissociated in water, being 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (CAS No. 94-75-7) its main product. Therefore, a conclusion on this endpoint was drawn based on data from 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. The aerobic biodegradation of 14C 2,4-D in a water/sediment system was investigated by Concha and Shepler (1993). This study was conducted according to US EPA 40 CFR 158.130 Subdivision N (162 -4), Aerobic Aquatic Metabolism, under GLP conditions. The test substance was incubated for 46 days at a temperature of 25°C and radiocarbon measured periodically. After a lag period of 25 days, 2,4-D degraded rapidly. The major metabolite was CO2 (63.9% of the applied radioactivity on day 46). The estimated dissipation half-life of the test substance in the water/sediment system was 29 days.

 

Simulation testing on biodegradation of sodium 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate in sediment is not deemed necessary due to the low adsorption potential of its hydrolysis product, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (Koc = 56*)
