Description of key information

The toxicity of Thioanisole to Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was determined in a 72 hour algal growth inhibition study conducted in accordance with OECD 201.
A 100 mg/L Water Soluble Fraction (WSF) was prepared in media by stirring for one day followed by a stabilisation period of 2-2¾ hours. The resulting aqueous mixture was filtered through glass wool. The resulting WSF was clear and colourless. The lower test concentrations were prepared by subsequent dilutions of the WSF in test medium.
Samples for analytical confirmation of actual exposure concentrations were taken at the start, after 24 hours of exposure and at the end of the test. Initial concentrations at 10, 18, 32, 56 and 100% of the WSF were 6.1, 11, 20, 36 and 70 mg/L, respectively. These concentrations decreased significantly during the first 24 hours of exposure. Effect parameters were based on average exposure concentrations, which were calculated to be: 0.19, 0.25, 0.32, 0.43 and 1.7 mg/L.

The EC50 for growth rate reduction (ERC50: 0-72h) was 1.3 mg/L with a 95% confidence interval ranging from 0.44 to 4.0 mg/L.
The EC50 for yield inhibition (EYC50: 0-72h) was 0.80 mg/L with a 95% confidence interval ranging from 0.43 to 1.5 mg/L.
The NOEC for both growth rate reduction and yield inhibition was 0.43 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment
