The Rosin adducts and rosin adduct salts category is a UVCB category and includes rosin or rosin salts that have been chemically reacted with either fumaric acid or maleic anhydride.Rosin acids are the predominant components of rosin (>85%). Rosin acids are composed of three skeletal classes of tricyclic carboxylic acids which share similar structure, but vary in the position of the double bonds and methyl groups. As each member of this category is a UVCB, the organic components will vary in type and proportion. However, once in water, the maleic anhydride form will hydrolyse to result in the same structures as rosin reacted with fumaric acid.The presence of a metal cation will not alter the structure of the organic component of the molecule. The organic component can therefore be viewed as equivalent across the category, and ecotoxicity results from one category member can be read across to other substances within the category.
Studies are available for members of this category for fish (Inveresk 2002), Daphnia (Harlan 2010, Harlan 2010) and algae (Inveresk 2002). Aquatic toxicity studies are available for three members of this category. All show no effects at the highest loadings tested in Water Accommodated Fraction studies. As no effects are shown in studies for members of this category the toxicity of members of the category Rosin adducts and rosin adduct salts is determined to be greater than the limit of solubility for these substances.
