Additional information

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the acute toxicity of diethylene glycol phenyl ether (DiEPh) to the freshwater daphnid, Daphnia magna. The study was conducted with two replicate vessels with ten daphnids per test level exposed to nominal test concentrations of 0 (water control), 77.8, 130, 216, 360, 600, and 1000 mg/L, over a 48-hour static exposure period. The daphnids were observed at approximately 24 and 48 hours for immobility (inability to swim within 15 seconds after gentle agitation of the test vessel) and sublethal effects. Temperatures during the exposure period ranged from 19-21°C. Dissolved oxygen levels ranged from 8.5-9.4 mg/L (96-106% oxygen saturation). The pH ranged from 7.9-8.1 and the light intensity ranged from 1890-2310 lux. Analytical verification of test solutions concentrations was performed on samples collected on days 0 and 2 of the study. Measured concentrations ranged from 92.8 to 97.8% of nominal on day 0 and 91.9 to 97.3% of nominal on day 2. The resulting mean measured treatment concentrations were 73.8, 123, 205, 334, 584, and 947 mg/L.

The results, based on mean measured concentrations, were as follows:

• 24-hour EC50 was greater than 947 mg/L, the highest concentration tested

• 48-hour EC50 = 906 mg/L (95% confidence interval not available)

• 48-hour NOEC = 584 mg/L.

This substance is not considered to be harmful to freshwater invertebrates
