Comparing all available readily biodegradation studies, the members of the AES category are generally to be found readily biodegradable (HERA [1] & Danish EPA [2]).

Since no biodegradability tests are available for AES (C12 -14, 1-2.5EO) NH4 (CAS 125301 -88 -4) a read-across approach from the two structural comparable AES (C12-14, 1-2.5EO) MIPA (CAS 1187742 -72 -8) and AES (C12-14, 1-2.5EO) Na (CAS 68891-38-3) was applied.

The first GLP-study was performed according to OECD guideline 301B and non-adapted domestic sludge was used (Sasol, 2004). After 28 days a biodegradation rate between 78 - 100% (CO2 evolution) was reported for the MIPA salt.

The second GLP-study was performed with non-adapted domestic sludge according to EU-guidelines (C.4-A) (Sasol, 1993).This test shows a biodegradation rate of 100% (DOC removal) after 28 days for the Na salt. 

Therefore, AES (C12 -14, 1-2.5EO) NH4 is considered to be readily biodegradable.
