Description of key information

A 96-hr static exposure was conducted with di-n-butyl ether (DnBE) exposed to the green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. The 72-hr ErC50 for specific growth rate was 19.1 mg DnBE/L and the NOEC was 8.91 mg DnBE/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
19.1 mg/L

Additional information

The compound di-n-butyl ether (DnBE) was evaluated for its effects on the growth of the green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata , over a 96-hour static exposure period. The data from this key study were used to determine the 72- and 96-hour ErC50s (based on growth rate), EyC50s (based on cell density), and no-observed-effects concentrations (NOECs) for each endpoint. Based on mean measured concentrations, the 72-hour calculated ErC50 (95% confidence intervals) for specific growth rate was 19.1 (10.1, 28.2) mg DnBE/L and the NOEC was 8.91 mg DnBE/L. A supporting study was also available that reported the toxicity of dibutyl ether (DnBE) to the blue-green algae (cyanobacteria), Microcysis aeruginosa. The 8 day NOEC was >= 50 mg/L.
