Short term toxicity to fish

A 96 h LC50 value of 1.04 mg/L has been determined for the effects of undecan-1-ol on mortality of the freshwater fish Pimephales promelas. This study represent the lowest reliable value available for this endpoint on undecanol and has been selected as key.

Long term toxicity to fish

In accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex IX, the long-term aquatic toxicity to fish study (required in Section 9.1.6) does not need to be conducted as the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I indicates that this is not necessary.

Short term toxicity to daphnia

A 96 h LC50 value of 0.8 mg/L has been determined for the effect of undecan-1-ol on the mortality of the brackish water invertebrate Nitocra spinipes. This represents the only reliable measured value available for this endpoint and has been chosen as key.

Long term toxicity to daphnia

A reliable chronic NOEC for Daphnia magna has been calculated (QSAR) to lie in the range of 0.044 - 0.17 mg/L based on reproduction (Schafers et al. 2009).

Toxicity to algae

An EC50 value in the range 0.1-1 mg/L has been estimated for the effects of undecan-1-ol on algal growth. The estimate is based on expert judgement, which takes into consideration measured and predicted ecotoxicity values for other trophic levels and the relative susceptibility of algae compared to such trophic levels, in the same substance category.

Toxicity to microorganisms

In waste-water treatment plant micro-organisms, undecan-1-ol does not cause inhibition at the limit of water solubility. In view of the ready biodegradability, further information is not required in REACH.

Reaction mass of 2-butylheptan-1-ol and 2-ethylnonan-1-ol and 2-methyldecan-1-ol and 2-propyloctan-1-ol contains linear undecanol and branched undecanol (a single methyl branch group in the 2-position).

Where no data are available for Reaction mass of 2-butylheptan-1-ol and 2-ethylnonan-1-ol and 2-methyldecan-1-ol and 2-propyloctan-1-ol and a study report is available with the closely related substance undecanol (CAS 112-42-5), it will be possible to directly read-across the results. Reaction mass of 2-butylheptan-1-ol and 2-ethylnonan-1-ol and 2-methyldecan-1-ol and 2-propyloctan-1-ol has a type of branched structure termed 'essentially linear' and the physicochemical, toxicological and ecotoxicological properties and behaviour do not differ significantly between such structures and their linear analogues. Additionally the two substances have identical molecular weights. It is therefore possible to read-across between the two substances. The difference in composition is dependent on the manufacturing process which may create linear alcohols or simple mono-branched structures. Direct read-across from undecanol (CAS 112-42-5) to Reaction mass of 2-butylheptan-1-ol and 2-ethylnonan-1-ol and 2-methyldecan-1-ol and 2-propyloctan-1-ol is therefore scientifically justified. In some cases the CAS and chemical identity stated refer to SDA nomenclature for this substance. in REACH substance identification it is necessary to be more specific as to the chain lengths present.
