Description of key information

Additional information

The physical and chemical properties of the substance were determined via a combination of endpoint testing and assessments of the chemical structure of the substance. In addition, the partition coefficient was also determined for a formulated product containing the registered substance. Endpoint data for this product was supplied as this is the form in which the substance is provided to the end user.

Basic physical and chemical properties summary - N-methyl salt

Physical State/Appearance: Soft tan (brown), waxy solid

Melting Point/Boiling Point: The extrapolated onset of melting was found to be 35.9°C. Decomposition began at 73°C

Vapour Pressure: 2.24 x 10-15 Pa at 25°C

Flash Point: 232°C. The substance is considered to be non-flammable.

Surface Tension: 68 mN/m. The substance is not considered to be surface active.

Water Solubility: The water solubility of the test substance was found to be >25% via a preliminary visual water solubility assessment at pH 7 and ambient temperature. A further visual assessment found a water solubility of >50% (>500 g/l).

Partition Coefficient: Log Kow(mean) = -0.43

Physical Hazards: Non-flammable, non-explosive and no oxidising potential.

Read-across data

Additional data has been provided for a second triethanolamine salt (tosyl salt), which is structurally similar substance to the registered substance. A summary of the basic physical and chemical properties of the substance has been provided for comparison with those of the registered substance, and to demonstrate the validity of the read-across approach.

Basic physical and chemical properties summary - tosyl salt

Physical State/Appearance: Pale brown, waxy solid

Melting Point/Boiling Point: The extrapolated onset of melting was found to be 56.9°C. Decomposition began at 154°C

Vapour Pressure: 6.27 x 10-14 Pa at 25°C

Flash Point: 256°C. The substance is considered to be non-flammable.

Surface Tension: 62.3 mN/m. The substance is not considered to be surface active.

Water Solubility: The water solubility of the test substance was found to be >25% via a preliminary visual water solubility assessment at pH 7 and ambient temperature. A further visual water solubility assessment found a water solubility of >50% (>500 g/l).

Partition Coefficient: Log Kow(mean) = -0.41

Physical Hazards: Non-flammable, non-explosive, no oxidising potential.

Read-across between the registered substance and tosyl salt is considered justified owing to the structural similarity of the two substances. Both are salts of a carboxylic acid and triethanolamine. The acid components are structural isomers and differ only in the position of a single methyl group in the N-methyl salt. This is not expected to change the behavior or properties of the substances, and both substances have shown similarity in the results of physical and chemical endpoint testing (see above).
