The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriately low concentrations.

Results on the toxicity to microorganisms are available for 2-aminoethyldiethylamine (CAS 100-36-7) itself and for the structurally similar read-across substance 3 -aminopropyldiethylamine (CAS 104 -78 -9).

As key study, a study with the structurally similar substance 3 -aminopropyldiethylamine (CAS 104 -78 -9) was selected. The study was performed according to OECD 209 (1993) and GLP to determine the effect of the test substance on the oxygen consumption of microbial-inoculum, compared to the blank control. The test was conducted at concentrations of 0 (control) and 1000 mg/L. The toxicity of the test substance was followed by exposing it to activated sludge from a domestic wastewater treatment plant over 30 minutes. All validation criteria were fulfilled. The pH value of the test solutions was neutralised. Based on the results, the EC20 value and the EC50 value were calculated to be greater than 1000 mg/L (BASF SE 2005, report no.: 08G0264/053084).

The results were supported by two studies with 2-aminoethyldiethylamine (CAS 100-36-7) itself.

- The objective of the non-GLP study according to DIN 38412 Part 8 was to determine the effect of different concentrations of the test substance on the growth inhibition of microbial inoculum, compared to the blank control. The test was conducted at concentrations of 0 (control), 31.25, 62.5,125, 250 500 and 1000 mg/L. The toxicity of the test substance was followed by exposing it to Pseudomonas putida for 17 hours. The EC10 was determined to be 111.7 mg/L (nominal) and the EC50 was determined to be 203.4 mg/L (nominal; BASF AG 1988, report no.: 9/1244/87)).

- Another supporting study of the substance itself was performed according to ISO 8192. The toxicity of the test item was estimated by exposing it to activated sludge from an industrial waste water treatment plant over 30 minutes. The 30 -min EC20 was determined to be greater than 1995 mg/L (BASF AG 1983, report no.: 347).

In addition, two supporting studies were performed with the structurally similar substance 3 -aminopropyldiethylamine (CAS 104 -78 -9).

- On study of the structurally similar test substance 3-aminopropyldiethylamine was carried out according to the German Industrial Standard DIN 38 412 Part 8. The toxicity of the test item was followed by exposing it to Pseudomonas putida for 17 hours. The EC10 was determined to be 76.1 mg/L (nominal) and the EC50 was determined to be 100.5 mg/L (nominal, BASF AG 1987, report no.: 9/0784/87).

- In addition, the toxicity of the structurally similar substance 3 -aminopropyldiethylamine has been investigated in a supporting study according to ISO 8192 with activated sludge from the BASF wastewater treatment plant, treating predominantly industrial sewage. After 30 min, respiration was not inhibited at all test concentrations up to 1995 mg/L (BASF AG 1983, report no.: 344).

In conclusion, the inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when 2 -Aminoethyldiethylamine is introduced in appropriately low concentrations.
