Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Tests for effects on terrestrial organisms do not need to be conducted. Direct and indirect exposure of the soil compartment is unlikely.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

According to REACH regulation (Annex IX, 9.4 column 2), testing with terrestrial organisms does not need to be conducted, if direct and indirect exposure of the soil compartment is unlikely.

According to guidance on information requirements R7c, in the case of readily biodegradable substances which are not directly applied to soil it is generally assumed that the substance will not enter the terrestrial environment and as such there is no need for testing of soil organisms required.

Stearic acid, esters with methyl α-D-glucoside is proven to be readily biodegradable and direct exposure to soil compartment is not expected. Due to the high Koc value most substance will stick to sludge, however due to the proven readily biodegradability, exposure pathway via STP sludge is considered not relevant. Furthermore no aquatic hazard has been identified in short term aquatic toxicity studies covering four trophic levels. As well in acute and sub-acute toxicity studies with rats no adverse effects were observed.

In conclusion further testing on stearic acid, esters with methyl α-D-glucoside with terrestrial organisms is not indicated.
