Description of key information

Applying the internationally recognized UN Recommendation criteria, the substance registered is found to be non-oxidizing and therefore is not to be tested experimentally for the classification under division 5.1 as oxidizing substances.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Oxidising properties:
no

Additional information

The substance registered is an organic compound which contains oxygen. Therefore the second criterion of the Orange Book has to be applied. The substance registered contains oxygen that is chemically bonded only to carbon or hydrogen. Therefore, the classification procedure using experimental testing need not be applied.

Additionally, it can be stated that the oxygen balance of the substance registered is negative as calculated based on the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods. In principle this means, that there is a surplus of carbon atoms for a complete reaction according to the following reaction scheme:

                           CxHyOz + [x + (y/4) – (z/2)] · O2 → x · CO2 + (y/2) · H2O

where CxHyOzis the substance registered.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Applying the internationally recognized UN Recommendation criteria, the substance registered is found to be non-oxidizing and therefore is not to be tested experimentally for the classification under division 5.1 as oxidizing substances. No classification applicable.
