The purpose of the study was to investigate changes in the animals which might result from the administration of NM in quantities which would prove fatal in a period of several hours.

Animals were given nitromethane in doses of 200 mg/kg every 10 minutes via IV on a pre-set dosing regimen. Once treated, the animals were observed until death or sacrifice.

IV toxicity of NM was somewhat dependent on the viscosity of the dosing solution (more viscous was less toxic). In most cases, the animals that were fatally poisoned died 8-18 hours after administration.
