In soil, the tetrahydrofuran - boron trifluoride complex reacts readily with the moisture to form tetrahydrofuran and boron trifluoride dihydrate. Tetrahydrofuran and boron trifluoride dihydrate are not readily biodegradable, but they have a low potential for adsorption. Tetrahydrofuran has a logKow 0.45. Boron trifluoride dihydrate, as well as its further hydrolysis products (e.g. boric acid, fluoroborates), are inorganic and have no cationic properties. Binding to sewage sludge is therefore unlikely, and as a consequence a transfer to the soil compartment is not expected. No tests on terrestrial organisms are therefore provided.
