Description of key information

By analogy with two of its constituent (i.e. cerium dioxide and lanthanum oxide), reaction mass of cerium dioxide and lanthanum oxide and lanthanum fluoride should not show any adverse chronic effect on daphnids.

Additional information

No data is available on the reaction mass. Based on the physico-chemical, environmental and ecotoxicological data available on both the reaction mass and its constituents, the substances show highly similar intrinsic properties. Therefore, a read-across with constituents when data are not available on the reaction mass appears fully relevant. Reliable long-term tests on daphnids, scored as Klimisch 2, are available for both cerium dioxide and lanthanum oxide (Höger, 2009a, b); revealing no adverse chronic effect. These results can be used in a weight-of-evidence approach to conclude on the chronic toxicity of reaction mass of cerium dioxide and lanthanum oxide and lanthanum fluoride without launching further tests. Another study of reliability 4 was available on cerium dioxide (Van Hoecke et al., 2009a) giving same results in terms of survival, but not in terms of reproduction (21d-NOEC = 32 mg/Lversus 22d-NOEC >= 100 mg/L in the Harlan study). However, due to the lack of experimental details provided in this study, it is not possible to conclude on its reliability
