Description of key information

For assessing the short-term aquatic risk for freshwater fish the  LL50 of > 10 mg/L, based on the nominal loading of the poorly water soluble test item zinc ricinoleate,  from the OECD 203 guideline study is used.

Additional information

The acute toxicity of zinc ricinoleate to zebrafish (Danio rerio) was investigated according to the OECD guideline 203 and the EEC method C1 in a limit-test under static conditions for 96 h. Due to the very low water solubility of zinc ricinoleate a Water Accommodated Fraction (WAF) of the test item was applied (loading of 10 mg/L).

The zinc level was stable during the test and the effect evaluation was based on mean measured concentrations (geometric mean) equivalent to the measured initial concentration. The measured zinc concentrations were 101 µg Zn/L (10.4 % of nominalL) at test start, 94.4 and 103 µg Zn/L (10.1 and 10.6 % of nominal) after 48 and 96 hours, respectively. The measured concentrations of dissolved zinc were used for re-calculating the test item concentration (9.73 % zinc) to be 1.04 mg zinc ricinoleate/L.

The effect data evaluation was based on both the nominal loading and the mean measured concentration of zinc ricinoleate.

Clinical signs could not be observed throughout the study. One single fish died at 72 h in the treatment vessel. However, mortality of 1 fish of 10 (10 %) was considered to be not biologically relevant.

The LL50was determined to be > 10 mg zinc ricinoleate/L (nominal loading),corresponding to a LC50of 1.04 mg zinc ricinoleate/L (mean measured based on the zinc concentration).
