Appearance/physical state/colour

On the basis of physical observation and using the sense of smell, tin(II) oxalate was found to be a cream amorphous organometallic solid with no odour at 23°C and 955 hPa.

Melting point/freezing point

From EPI suite Adapted Joback Method melting point of tin(II) oxalate was estimated to be 246.54 degC.

Boiling point

From EPI suite Stein and Brown Method boiling point of tin(II) oxalate was estimated to be 413.50 degC.

Density

The bulk density of tin(II) oxalate by the mass by volume method was found to be 7.90 g/cm3 at room temperature of 23 °C .This density value when converted at 20 deg.C is equivalent to 9.085.

Particle size distribution (Granulometry)

The particle size distribution (granulometry) of tin(II) oxalate by the sieve analysis method was found to be in the range of 53 micrometer to 600 micrometer. Majority of the particles were found to be in the size 150 (42.91 %) micrometer in size.

Vapour Pressure

Vapour pressure of tin(II) oxalate was estimated to be 0.000000172 mm Hg at 25 deg C temperature. This value when converted into Pascal (Pa) equivalent to 0.000022931 Pa at a temperature of 25°C.

Partition coefficient

The experimental value of octanol- water partition co-efficient (log Pow) of tin(II) oxalate by Shake flask method was found to be -0.4559 at temperature 23 deg C and pH of 3.10.This value indicates that tin(II) oxalate is relatively hydrophilic in nature.

Water solubility

The experimental value of the water solubility of tin(II) oxalate was found to be 1100 mg/L at 23°C by Shake flask method. This value indicates that tin(II) oxalate is soluble in water.

Solubility in organic solvents/fat solubility

Gravimetric method was used to determine the solubility of the substance in organic solvent. The experimental value of solubility of tin(II) oxalate in methanol at 23 degC was found to be 2400 mg/L indicating that the substance is soluble in methanol.Using the Soxhlet/Solvent extraction method the solubility of the substance in Petroleum ether is observed to be 3400 mg/L at 23 °C. The solubility value of tin(II) oxalate petroleum ether at 20 degC is equivalent to a value of 2956.52 mg/L. 

Surface tension:-

In accordance with Column 2 adaptation statement of REACH Annex VII, information requirement 7.6, this study does not need to be conducted if, based on structure, surface activity is not expected and no surface-active properties would be predicted for this compound. Surface activity is not a desired property of the material.

Flash point

Flash point of tin(II) oxalate was estimated to be 188.8 °C using ACD/PhysChem Suite.

Auto flammability

Tin(II) oxalate did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 23ºC and atmospheric pressure of 955 hPa. This indicates that tin(II) oxalate is not auto-flammable.

Flammability

From the experimental values of flammability, tin (II)oxalate ignited when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of 950 degC was brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that tin (II) oxalate is flammable only at high temperature of about 950 degC. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, tin (II) oxalate was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment. 

Explosiveness

According to theoretical considerations based on chemical structure, tin(II) oxalate does not possess explosive or oxidizing properties. The reason for these is there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties in tin(II) oxalate. Thus, as per column 2 of Annex VII this information is not required.

Oxidising properties

Tin(II) oxalate was found to have mild oxidising property since 13739 ml of KMnO4 was required for getting the end point of the redox titration for 100 g of tin(II) oxalate.Thus, the chemical is considered as non-oxidising for the purpose of chemical safety report and classification.

Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products

tin(II) oxalate was found to be stable in organic solvent dichloro methane and no degradation products were formed after 24 hours as evident from the GC-MS chromatogram obtained at 0 hours and that obtained after 24 hours.

pH

1% by volume solution of tin(II) oxalate was found to exhibit a pH of 2.41 at 24 degC. Thus 1% by volume solution of tin(II) oxalate is acidic in nature.

Dissociation constant

The experimental pKa value for tin(II) oxalate is found to be 0.000303 at 23 deg C indicating that it has dissociation properties.The pKa value at 20 deg C is equivalent to 0.000262608.

Viscosity

This end point was considered for waiver as viscosity is an inherent property of liquid substances and tin(II) oxalate is an organometallic solid. Therefore testing for this end point was considered scientifically unjustified and considered for waiver.
