Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The 72 h EbC50 and ErC50 of the test substance were 24 and >50<100 mg/L respectively. The NOEC and LOEC values of the test substance were determined to be 6.3 and 13 mg/L respectively.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
24 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
6.3 mg/L

Additional information

A study was performed to assess the adverse effects of test substance on the growth and growth rate of the planktonic freshwater algal speciesDesmodesmus subspicatusover several generations. The study was conducted in accordance with EU Method C.3., OECD Guideline 201 and an instruction for the performance of a modified algal growth inhibition test published by Memmert & Knoell.

Exponentially growing algal cells were exposed for a period of 72 h to a limit test concentration of nominally 6.3, 13, 25, 50 and 100 mg/L of test substance dissolved in water(Part I).A second series (Part II) of test vessels treated in the same way as the controls, but placed below glass vessels containing the same range of concentrations of the test substance as described above, but without algae, was set up to

distinguish between algistatic (indirect effect caused by light absorption) and algicide (toxic) effects.

The cell densities were measured at 24 h intervals. Inhibition of the algal population was measured as reduction in growth (index b) and growth rate (index r), relative to control.

All results are expressed in terms of nominal concentrations. Measured concentrations ranged from 101.8-103.8 and 102.4-112.6% of nominal values at 0 and 72 h respectively.

The 72 h EbC50 and ErC50 of the test substance were 24 and >50<100 mg/L respectively. The NOEC and LOEC values of the test substance were determined to be 6.3 and 13 mg/L respectively (Dr. Bruns, 2002).
