Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

No data on toxicity of tricalcium dicitrate 813 -94 -5 to aquatic invertebrates are available. A 24 h aquatic invertebrate study is, however, available for the parent acid of tricalcium dicitrate, citric acid 77-92 -9 with Daphnia magna in a neutralised solution. It is considered appropriate to read across the aquatic invertebrate results to tricalcium dicitrate 813 -94 -5 because under conditions relevant to ecotoxicity assessment, the tricalcium salt of citric acid is expected to be fully dissociated. Tricalcium dicitrate is not expected to contribute to the toxicity of the substance, being a ubiquitous element.

The study determines an LC50 value based on mortality of the test organism, by today's standards it is thought by the reviewer to be more accurate to refer to an EC50 value based on immobility, due to the difficulties is determining mortality of daphnids by visual inspection. Therefore a 24 h EC50 value of 1535 mg/L was determined for the effects of citric acid 77 -92 -9 on D. magna

The resulting EC50 for citric acid is 1535 mg/L, which is equivalent to 1535 * 1.29 = 1980 mg/L of tricalcium dicitrate

using(Mass of one mole of salt)/(mass of citric acid produced when salts dissociates) = 498.4 / (2 * 192.9) = 1.29.
