Description of key information

Octanoic acid, zinc salt, basic:

Octanoic acid, zinc salt, basic is produced by the oleochemistry sector, starting from natural fatty materials and with a maximum content of 78% natural fatty acids and 24 % zinc, respectively. Octanoic acid, zinc salt, basic is a zinc salt of a shorter-chained fatty acid containing 8 C-atoms.

Octanoic acid, zinc salt, basic (CAS 90480-58-3) is readily biodegradable according to results of an OECD 301F- test (Simon, 2012); furthermore, inhibitory effects of octanoic acid, zinc salt, basic were not observed in the toxicity control (more than 25 % degradation within 14 days). According to ECHA Guidance on information requirements and CSA Chapter R.7b (June, 2018), „if a compound degrades well in a ready biodegradability test, or does not inhibit the degradation of a positive control at a certain concentration, this concentration can be used as a NOEC value.“ Thus, octanoic acid, zinc salt, basic (CAS 90480-58-3) is not toxic to aquatic microorganisms at 100 mg/L.

In addition, zinc salts of fatty acids of longer alkyl chain length, i.e. C16- C18 fatty acids, zinc salts (CAS 91051-01-3) and zinc bis(12-hydroxyoctadecanoate) (CAS 35674-68-1) showed similar biodegradation results, i.e. 93% and 71.4%, respectively after 28 days in OECD 301 tests (Tuev Bayern, 1994; Rudolf, 2002). Thus, similar biodegradation rates are observed in different tests with zinc salts of short-chained (C8) and long-chained (C16 -18) fatty acids.

Octanoic acid:

Fatty acids as contained in plant and animal tissue are a natural component of soil, represent a significant part of the nutritional demands of living organisms, are rapidly degraded, non-bioaccumulative and therefore of low toxic potential towards aquatic microorganisms. Zinc:

Based on a study conducted by Juliastuti et al. (2003), NOEC of 0.1 mg Zn/L is reported in an ISO 9509 nitrification inhibition test. For more detailed information, please refer to the respective assessment entity.
