Although BMI is not likely to undergo significant biotic biodegradation in the environment, it is likely to have a high mobility. A Soil Adsorption Study performed by HPLC method calculated a soil adsorption coefficient, Koc of 970 (log Koc= 3.0). On this basis BMI would not be expected to adsorb onto sediment.

The hydrolysis half-life of BMI was found to be low, ranging from <5 minutes at alkaline pH (pH 9) to 12 hours at acidic pH (pH 4); therefore BMI would be anticipated to rapidly break down by abiotic degradation in contact with water.
