In the key study, after 28 days, the mean of degradabilities by BOD measurement was 85%, the mean of degradabilities by DOC measurement was 96%, and all of the disappearance rates of the test substance were more than or equal to 98%, all leading to the judgment that the test substance is readily biodegradable (Mitsubishi Chemical Safety Institute, 2001).

A Pseudomonas sp. strain was isolated by enrichment culture from soil using 2,3-dichloro-propanol-1 as the sole carbon source.

> 99 % degradation occured after 24 hours. Therefore the substance is considered readily biodegradable (Castro, C.E. & Bartnicki, E.W., 1968).

In one strain, an inducible epoxide hydrase using glycidol as substrate was detected in 40000 g crude supernatants from bacterial extracts. Enzyme activity (30 degree C, pH 7.5, 5 mM glycidol):  bacteria grown on epichlorohydrin 107 U/ g prot., grown on glycidol 817 U/g prot.Glycerol was identified as hydrolysis product (van den Wijngaard, A.J. et al., J., 1989).

Therefore, 2,3-epoxypropan-1-ol is considered to be readily biodegradable.
