- Justification:
2-(diphenylphosphino)benzoic acid (and the transformation product 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzoic acid oxide) are not expected to be readily or inherently biodegradable based on QSAR and publicly available data (OSPAR, 2000) for structurally analagous substances (Triphenyl phosphine; CAS: 603-35-0 and Triphenylphosphine oxide; CAS: 791 -28 -6). The substance is assessed as being potentially P i.e. meets the criteria for classification as persistent in the environment.
2-(diphenylphosphino)benzoic acid has a log Kow value of 2.9 at pH 2.0 (non-ionised netural form) and a predicted fish BCF value of 36 L/Kg. Both of these values are below the log Kow 4.0 and BCF 500 threshold limits for classification as potentially bioaccumulative. The substance therefore is assessed as not B i.e. not potentially bioaccumulative.
Chronic toxicity of 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzoic acid to freshwater invertebrates has been investigated in a historical study. The 21d NOEC for the substance was established to be 0.32 mg/L. Therefore the substance does not meet the criteria for classification as T based on an assessment of the available ecotoxicity data. [Need to include statement on mammalian tox]
