Conclusion on classification

According to Directive 67/548/EEC, thymol is legally classified as "Toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment" with the phrase of R 51-53 and is assigned the symbol "N" in Annex I.

According to the up-to-date information, classification is considered unnecessary:

- The most sensitive acute toxicity is to aquatic fish (Pimephales promelas) and invertebrate (Daphnia magna): 96h- LC50 of 3.2 mg/L and 48h-LC50 of 3.2 mg/l (Ewell et al., 1986).

- The acute toxicity observed is much lower than the water solubility of thymol (ca. 980 mg/l).

- Thymol is readily biodegradable (Currenta, 2010).

- Measured BCF of ca. 48 is lower than 100 (MITI, 1996)

Based on the data listed above, thymol is considered not necessarily to be classified according to GHS (Regulation EC 1272/2008).
