Additional information

No data on toxicity to microorganisms is available on the reaction mass of chlorodifluoroacetic acid (CDFA) and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA).

The following data are available on each constituent:

For CDFA, a 3-hour activated sludge respiration inhibition test was performed using activated sludge from a domestic waste treatment plant according to the OECD Testing Guideline 209 and under GLP conditions. The microorganisms were exposed to five concentrations of the test substance at nominal concentrations of 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1600 mg/L. The respiration rate, expressed as oxygen consumption by the microbes in mg O2 per liter per hour, was measured under defined conditions following the 3-hour exposure period. Inhibition values were calculated by comparing test respiration rates to negative control rates.

EC50 values were calculated by regression analysis. The result indicated that under valid test conditions the 3 h-EC50 value of 3, 5-dichlorophenol was 6.98mg/L. The 3 h-EC50 value of the test substance Chlorodifluoroacetic acid was 660mg/L.

For TFA, the influence of the test item Sodium trifluoroacetate on the activated sludge was evaluated by measuring the respiration rate under defined conditions, according to EU Method C.11 and OECD 209 Guidelines. The respiration rate (oxygen consumption) of an aerobic activated sludge fed with a standard amount of synthetic sewage was measured in the presence of various concentrations of the test item (10, 32, 100, 320 and 1000 mg/L) after an incubation period of 3 hours. The inhibition of the bacterial respiration activity was in the range of 3.2 to 9.7% for the test concentrations of 10 to 1000 mg/L. Therefore, the NOEC of Sodium trifluoroacetate was established above 1000 mg/L (832 mg TFA/L). The positive control 3,5 -Dichlorophenol was tested in the same way as the test item with nominal concentrations of 3.2, 10 and 32 mg/L. The 3 -hour EC50 was found to be 12.0 mg/L thus laying in the range of 5 -30 mg/L recommended by the test guidelines. The result confirms the suitability of the activated sludge used.

Considering that the reaction mass of chlorodifluoroacetic acid (CDFA) and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is mainly composed of CDFA, the reaction mass is considered to have a 3h EC50 value for microorganisms of 660 mg/L.
