Acute data

Several studies on BPS have been performed, and the fish LC50 values reported are higher than 100 mg/L. Therefore, it is non-toxic to fish.1 2 3

Acute invertebrate studies are also available on BPS and the LC50 results are higher than 45 mg/L. It is therefore, non-toxic for aquatic invertebrates.1 2 3 4

Acute algae studies reported an LC50 higher than 1 mg/L.1 2 3

The EC50 on STP, according to OECD Guideline 209 (Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test) value was determined to be 390 mg/L.1 2 3

Therefore, there is no concern regarding the acute environmental exposure to fish, invertebrates and algae for BPS.

2,4'-sulfonyldiphenol CAS 5397-34-2 is considered non toxic for the aquatic compartment (C&L ECHA Inventory), and no data are available.

For a phenol sulfonic acid sodium salt, the benzenesulfonic acid, 4-hydroxy-, sodium salt (1:1), CAS 825-90-1, no measured data are available. Calculation of the relevant endpoints with the ECOSAR model predicts that hydroxybenzenesulphonic acid is not toxic to aquatic species. More realistic data on salified similar substances called hydrotropes, can be considered.

A category approach evaluation is available for sodium xylenesulphonate. The estimated ecotoxicological property of this substance can be helpful (in read across as well) to understand the acute ecotoxicity of sodium sulphonated phenols, part of the intermediate DCB.

The sodium xylenesulphonate is considered non toxic for the acute exposure in the environmental compartment, STP included.5

Phenol is considered non toxic for the acute exposure in the environmental compartment.6

Chronic data

Long term Estimation on BPS according to ECOSAR (as phenols, poly) revealed no concern for fish, crustaceans and algae.1 2 3

Test on chronic exposure to crustaceans are available. The measured EC50 value on BPS for Daphnid was 14 mg/L while the measured NOEC was 2.7mg/L.1 2 3

Using a conservative approach, the unidentified LOEC for chronic toxicity in Daphnid is assumed to be between 2.7 and 14 mg/L, which partly spans the range of values that indicate a moderate hazard concern (1-10 mg/L).1 2 3

In the REACH Registration dossier of phenol, a chronic classification for the aquatic compartment has been proposed as self-classification, compared to the Annex VI harmonized classification. The substance is self-classified as an environmental toxicant (category 2, H411).6
