Description of key information

An experimental value for Koc of 75-101 L/kg is available for C8 alkyl sulfate. Estimated values of 10 and 31.52  have been calculated for the C6- and C8- alkane sulfonates using KOCWIN v2.00.

It is reasonable to assume that alkyl sulfates and alkane sulfonates share a common sorption mechanism -mainly hydrophobic interactions due to the alkyl chains with no ionic interactions by the functional groups – especially considering the similarities in their structures. Therefore, it is reasonable to read across an experimentally derived Koc value from sodium octyl sulfate to the C6-8 alkane sulfonate as a worse case for the whole substance. The experimental value of 75 L/kg is supported by estimations on the two main constituents of the alkane sulfonate, which produced values of 10 and 31.52 L/kg for the C6- and C8- alkane sulfonates, respectively.
