Description of key information

Additional information

Appearance/physical state/colour :

On the basis of physical observation and using the sense of smell 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol was found to be an organic, Colourless odourless liquid

Melting point/freezing point :

Freezing point of 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol was estimated to be -12.57 °C

Boiling point :

The boiling point of 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol by the distillation method was found to be 84.2degC at the atmospheric pressure of 975 hPa.No decomposition of 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol was observed at this boiling point. The other authoritative source of information though indicate the boiling point to be in the range of 68 -81Deg C which could be due to varying pressure conditions. However for the purpose of the dossier as well as for the chemical safety report, the boiling point of the key study which is 84.2 degC shall be considered. This boiling point value at 101325 Pa is equivalent to 85.63 degC.

Density :

The experimental value of density of 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol by the mass by volume method was found to be 1.122 g/cm3 at room temperature of 30 °C . This value when converted into 20 degC is equivalent to 0.748 g/cm3. The supporting studies show values different from the key study which could be due to the difference in the estimation conditions. However for the purpose of the dossier and chemical safety assessment, the key study values shall be used.

Particle size distribution (Granulometry) :

Granulometry (particle size distribution is a property that is relevant only to solids. Since 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol is a liquid substance and shall be used in non-solid form, this end point was considered for waiver.

Vapour pressure :

Vapour pressure of 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol was found to be 0.17 mm Hg at 20°C. This value when converted to Pascal is equivalent to 22.66 Pa. The supporting study shows value a vapour presure value ranging between 0.0996 and 0.234 mm Hg. For the purpose of dossier and chemical safety assessment key study values shall be considered.

Partition coefficient :

The experimental value of octanol water partition co-efficient (log Pow) of 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol by Shake flask method was found to be 0.3010 at temperature 30 degC and pH of 4.37.This value indicates that 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol is relatively hydrophilic in nature.

Water solubility :

The experimental value of the water solubility of 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol was found to be 70000 mg/L at 30 degC indicating that it is very soluble in water.

Solubility in organic solvents / fat solubility :

Gravimetric method was used to determine the solubility of the substance in organic solvent. The experimental value of solubility of 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol in Petroleum Ether at 30 degC was found to be 170000 mg/L indicating that this substance is Very soluble in Petroleum Ether. This value at 20 degC is equivalent to 113333.33 mg/L.

Surface tension :

Surface tension of 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol was estimated as 34.493 mN/m

Flash point :

The flash point of a substance is the lowest temperature at which it can form an ignitable mixture in air. The experimental value of flash point of 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol by the open cup method was found to be 65.1 deg C at 975 hPa atmospheric pressure. This value when converted into 101 325 pascal is equivalent to 67.65 degC. The supporting study shows value different from the key study which could be due to difference in the estimation conditions. However for the purpose of dossier and chemical safety assessment , the key study value shall be considered.

Auto flammability :

2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 30 deg C and atmospheric pressure of 975 hPa. This indicates that 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol is not auto-flammable.

Flammability :

From the experimental values of flammability, 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol ignited when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of 950 degC was brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol is flammable only at high temperature of about 950 degC. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.

Explosiveness :

According to theoretical considerations based on chemical structure, 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol does not possess explosive properties. The reason for this is there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties in 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol. Thus, as per column 2 of Annex VII this end point was considered for waiver.

Oxidising properties :

2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol was found to be mildly oxidising since 30.98 ml of KMnO4 was required for getting the end point of the redox titration for 100 g of 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol.

Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products :

2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol was found to be stable in organic solvent dichloro methane and no degradation products were formed after 24 hours as evident from the GC-MS chromatogram obtained at 0 hours and that obtained after 24 hours.

pH :

1% by volume solution of 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol was found to exhibit a pH of 3.52 at 25 degC. Thus 1% by volume solution of 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol is relatively acidic in nature.

Dissociation constant :

The experimental pKa value for 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol was found to be 0.00000113, 0.00000114, 0.00000115 at 30 degC indicating that it has some dissociation properties. The average pKa value at 20 Deg C is equivalent to 0.00000114.

Viscosity :

Viscosity of 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol by Ostwald Viscometer at temperature of 30 deg C was found to be 5.331744 mPa . s. This value at 20 deg C is equivalent to a value of 3.55 mPa · s (dynamic).
