Additional information

This substance is an inorganic layered slicate, a synthetic hectorite clay. It is stable under normal environmental conditions in the pH range of 4 -10. It will not "dissolve" as such in water but disperses to form a clear colloidal sol that does not hydrolyse nor dissociate in this pH range. It retains its clay structure in the environment and by virtue of its inorganic nature is not biodegradable. Nor is it assessed to be bioaccumulating based on knowledge of the stability and hydrolysis characteristics and the potential breakdown products should harsher environmental conditions be apparent. Accidental release of this material to the soil or aqueous sediment would not be detrimental. This material is essentially an artificial soil/sediment in itself by virtue of the fact that it is a synthetic clay whose natural counterparts are found abundantly in nature in soils and sediments in lakes, river beds and marine environments.
