The assessment was therefore based on studies conducted with the structurally analogue substances Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 85049-37-2) and Fatty acids, C8-16, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 135800-37-2), as part of a read across approach, which is in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5. Further justification is given within the overall summary chapter 6.1 and within the analogue justification section 13.
The acute toxicity of Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 85049-37-2) was tested in a study following OECD 203 (Richterich 2001). The test organisms (Danio rerio) were exposed to nominal substance concentrations of 1000, 3000 and 10000 mg/L for 96 hours. Mortality or effects of intoxication were not observed during the exposure period. Thus a LC50(96h) > 10000 mg/L was determined at test termination. Comparable results were obtained in a short-term toxicity study on the second read across substance Fatty acids, C8-16, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 135800-37-2). The short-term toxicity study was performed according to EU Method C.1 under GLP conditions (Wierich, 1998). The test was set up under semi-static conditions. The test fish (Danio rerio) were exposed for 96 hours to nominal test concentrations of 1000, 3000 and 10000 mg/L. No mortality was observed at any of the tested concentrations and a LC50 (96h) > 10000 mg/L was determined at test termination.
Thus, based on the above mentioned result, and due to the structural and profile similarities of the substances, as are explained with in the overall endpoint summary 6.1 it can be concluded that no toxicological effects on fish are expected up to the limit of water solubility for Fatty acids, soya, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 93572-14-6).
