Principles of method if other than guideline:
Test Principle
A quantity of sample, normally 5 - 10 mg, is sealed in a test crucible. This is placed in a furnace cell along with an empty reference pan. The furnace is allowed to equilibrate to the starting temperature and both pans are then heated at between 0.5 and 20 K.min-1 until the final temperature is reached. The temperature of the sample and that of the reference pan are monitored. Any endothermic or exothermic activity within the sample will result in a change in heat flow out of the cell relative to the reference pan. All data is logged using a microcomputer.
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Type of method:
differential scanning calorimetry
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Test Item Name: MDI PIR (EC Number: 500-297-1)
Substance Name: 4,4'-Methylenediphenyl diisocyanate, oligomeric reaction products with 2,4'-diisocyanatodiphenylmethane
CAS Number: 109331-54-6
Batch/ Lot Number: H180957003
Description: colourless to yellowish liquid
Expiry date: 10/06/2019 storage at room RT
Decomposition:
yes
Decomp. temp.:
ca. 319 °C
Remarks on result:
other:
Remarks:
No boiling event was observed

Comments

No boiling event was observed, the sample was found to undergo decomposition at approximately 319°C. On completion of testing a dark brown solid remained.

Conclusions:
No boiling event was observed, the sample was found to undergo decomposition at approximately 319°C. On completion of testing a dark brown solid remained.
Executive summary:

Test objective:

To screen a sample of MDI PIR (EC Number: 500-297-1) in order to determine the boiling point and / or the onset temperature and magnitude of any exothermic activity.

Test Procedure

A sample of MDI PIR (EC Number: 500-297-1) was charged to an open aluminium DSC crucible which was then placed in the furnace. In the screening test the sample was then ramped from 20C to 500C at 20 K.min-1.

Test result:

319°C Decomposition

Description of key information

There was no boiling point detected between -100 °C up to 450 °C, according to EU method A.2.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Decomposition started at approx. 280 °C.

A slight exothermal effect between approx. 175 °C and approx. 190 °C could be detected.
