General Information
- Name:
- Self-classification of renewable hydrocarbons (diesel type fraction)
- Implementation:
- EU
- Type of classification:
- self-classification
- Remarks:
Classification is conducted based on the experimental data on the substance and the read-across data on similar fossil diesel fuels taken into account also the harmonized classification entries of fossil fuels and the harmonised C&L of the critical constituents in the substance.
In case there is no adequate data on the substance or the surrogate substances, the CLP mixture rules are applied and the hazards are derived based on the maximum concentration of the relevant constituents:
Fossil diesel fuels have harmonized classification entries as Carc Cat 2 H351 in accordance with Annex VI of CLP 1272/2008, and as Carc Cat 3 in accordance with Annex I of Directive 67/548/EEC. This harmonized C&L of fossil fuels is due to the carcinogenic polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The PAH analysis was conducted to investigate the PAH content in the target UVCB substance. The only carcinogenic PAH detected was naphthalene at the concentration of 0.0015 % (w/w). Based on the CLP mixture rules no carcinogenicity classification is warranted for the substance since the generic limit value in CLP reg. triggering the classification of mixtures to carcinogenicity (Cat 2) is 1 %.
Benzo(a)pyrene has harmonized classification as Carcinogenicity Category 1B with specific concentration limit of c ≥ 0.01 % set in CLP Annex VI. However, in the PAH analysis conducted for renewable diesel no benzo(a)pyrene was detected. The limit of detection of the analysis was 0.00024 % (w/w).
