First-aid measures

Inhalation: In the event of inhalation, remove victim from contaminated area into fresh air. If breathing has stopped, perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. If breathing is difficult, provide oxygen. Seek medical care.
CAUTION: If the substance inhaled is toxic, infectious or corrosive, it may be dangerous to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Seek medical care immediately.
Contact with skin: After contact with skin, wipe skin with a dry cloth and rinse abundantly with water for at least 20 minutes. Seek medical care immediately. Wash clothes before wearing them again.
Contact with eyes: After contact with eyes, flush carefully with plenty of water for 20 minutes. Consult a doctor or a specialist immediately.
Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting (risk of perforation). Seek medical care immediately. Do not neutralise the substance.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing agents: Powder, carbon dioxide, dry sand (depending on products in the surrounding area).
Prohibited extinguishing agents: Water, foam.
Specific risks: DO NOT USE WATER. Water can cause a violent reaction. The substance is not combustible. Water hydrolyses the substance and liberates acid gases which can generate flammable, explosive, gaseous hydrogen in contact with metal surfaces.
Special protection equipment: Insulating breathing apparatus. Full body protection.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions: In general, avoid dusty conditions. Do not breath any dust. Do not expose to water spillage. Do not take action without suitable protective equipment.
Precaution to protect the environment: Do not release into drains or rivers
Clean-up: Collect the substance mechanically using a brush and pan, then place it in dry containers.
Avoid all contact with water or humidity. Use suitable tools to place the spilled solid in an appropriate waste container.
Collect as much of the product as possible. Wash surfaces with water afterwards.

Handling and storage

Handling: Only use in dry well ventilated areas. Avoid any contact with water and humid substances. Avoid all contact with eyes, skin or clothes. Do not breath any dust.
Storage: Store in a dry, well-ventilated are away from incompatible products. Always keep in a sealed polyethylene container. Prevent the formation of dust. Keep container tightly closed and dry.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Hand protection:
Wear acid proof gloves, complying with EN 374 or equivalent

Body protection:
For activities causing peaks of exposure to the degradation product of hafnium tetrachloride wear anti-acid protective clothing.

Eye protection:
Wear airtight safety glasses compliant with EN166

Respiratory protection:
For activities involving exposure to hafnium tetrachloride dust, wear a mask that complies with standards EN149 or EB405 or equivalent, with a P3 (EN 143) and E rated (EN 141) filter.
For activities causing peaks of exposure to the degradation product of hafnium tetrachloride (HCl), or for activities involving exposure to hafnium tetrachloride dust for more than 60 minutes, wear a full mask fitted with an ABEKP3 filter cartridge, compliant with EN 136 or equivalent, with a B, E (EN 141) and P3 (EN 143) rating dust and inorganic acid vapour filter.

Special hygiene measures:
Do not drink, eat or smoke while working. Remove any soiled clothing. Wash your hands after handling the substance.

Stability and reactivity

Chemical stability: Reacts violently in contact with water. Stable at ambient temperature and under normal conditions of use.
Danger of ignition or formation of inflammable gases/vapours if contact with alkaline metals.
Condition to be avoided: Exposure to humid air or water (produces heat and hydrochloric acid).
Materials to be avoided: Reacts exothermally with: Ethers, ethanol, hydrofluoric acid – bases and acids. Reacts violently with water.
Hazardous decomposition products: Hydrochloric acid. Hafnium oxychloride.

Disposal considerations

Disposal of the product: In controlled facilities, solubilise in water carefully then neutralise slowly. NOTE: The user’s attention is drawn to the possible existence of specific legislative, regulatory and administrative requirements issued by European, national or local bodies concerning the elimination of this product.
Handling of containers: Soiled containers must be processed in the same way as the chemical product they contain.
