Concerning the toxicity to the aquatic compartment, tests for each trophic level are available. 3-hydroxy-2-(3-hydroxy-2-quinolyl)-1H-inden-1-one showed no effects on alltrophic levels up to the solubility limit and even above the solubility limit.


The acute toxicity to fish (Pimephales promelas) of 3-hydroxy-2-(3-hydroxy-2-quinolyl)-1H-inden-1-one was tested in a static test.

The study was conducted in accordance with APHA. AWWA. WPCF. Standard Method for the Examination of Water and Wastewater. 13th ed. American Public Health Association. INC. New York (1971).

After 96 hours of exposure a TL50 (the concentration at which 50 % of the experimental animals survive) of >180 mg/L was observed.


According to REACH Annex VII column 2 no short term toxicity study on Daphnia was performed. 3-hydroxy-2-(3-hydroxy-2-quinolyl)-1H-inden-1-one is highly insoluble in water and therefore a long term toxicity study on daphnids was performed. The study was performed according to EU method C.20. Within 21 days no effects were observed up to the limit of water solubility.


A toxicity test of the substance to green algae in accordance with the OECD Guideline 201 was performed. No effects were observed within 72 h test duration up to the water solubility limit.


A respiration inhibition test revealed no effects on activated sludge up to the limit concentration of 1000 mg/L. The OECD Guideline 209 (Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test) was applied.
