All available short-term studies on sodium benzotriazole and read across substances have shown effect concentrations > 8.5 mg/L (D. galeata exposed to 5 -methyl-1H-benzotriazole) indicating an overall low acute toxicity towards aquatic organisms. Lowest available long-term effect values has been found in studies with Daphnia galeata (EC10(21d) =0.97 mg/L (1H-Benzotriazole), EC10(21d) =0.4 mg/L (5 -methyl-1H-benzotriazole)), Desmodesmus subspicatus

(EC10(72h) =1.18 mg/L (1H-Benzotriazole), EC10(72h) =2.86 mg/L (5 -methyl-1H-benzotriazole)), and Lemna minor

(EC10(7d) =3.94 mg/L (1H-Benzotriazole), EC10(7d) =2.11 mg/L (5 -methyl-1H-benzotriazole)) indicating a moderate toxicity to aquatic organisms.

Several studies on toxicological effects in different fish species are available indicating moderate toxicity towards fishes.

The most sensitive LC50 in freshwater species (Rainbow trout; Oncorhynchus mykiss) derived for sodium benzotriazole was 14.84 mg/L (expressed as active ingredient). The most sensitive value for sodium benzotriazole in a saltwater study with Inland Silversides was a 96 hour LC50 of 30.75 mg/L (expressed as active ingredient).

Therefore, no further testing on long-term effects in fish has been proposed. Furthermore results from testing on microorganism indicate a low hazard to STPs only. Based on the results from the chronic studies with D. galeata 1H-Benzotriazole, Tolyltriazole as well as their conjugated sodium salts are classified as hazardous to the aquatic environment category Chronic 2 according Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
