Description of key information

PNEC for bethic organisms can be calculated applying the equilibrium partitioning method using a Kpsed or Kdsed of 43274 L/kg (or Koc of 865480 L/kg) this leads to a PNEC of 6.5 mg/kd dw including the additional correction factor of 10 for additional exposure via ingestion.

PNEC sediment based on EPM

In the absence of measured data the PNECsed can be provisionally calculated using the equilibrium partitioning method (EPM). According to the TGD this method uses the PNECaquatic and the sediment/water partitioning coefficient as inputs. However, since the available PNECaquatic is based on the bulk concentration present in surface water a recalculation is necessary first:

PNECaquatic, dissolved               =        PNECaquatic bulk/ (1 + Kpsusp* SUSPwater* 10-6)

Where:        

PNECaquatic bulk =      1.726 µg/L

 Kpsusp            =      86548 L/kg

 SUSPwater        =      15 mg/L (EU TGD, 2003)

The PNECsedis then calculated using the equations detailed in the TGD (2003):

 PNECsed                         =   Ksusp-water* PNECaquatic dissolved* 1000 * 1 / RHOsusp

Where:      

PNECaquatic dissolved =      0.751µg/L

Ksusp-water             =      21638 m3.m-3

RHOsusp               =      1150 kg.m-3(TGD, equ. 18)

PNECsed-EPM                     = 14.13 mg/kg ww = 65 mg/kg dw without correction for additional exposure via ingestion

PNECsed-EPM                     = 1.41 mg/kg ww  = 6.5 mg/kg dw with correction for additional exposure via ingestion

The concentration at which no effects are expected for sediment organisms is calculated using the equilibrium partitioning method. This method is based on the assumption that sediment organisms are equally sensitive to the substance as aquatic organisms. For a similar substance i.e. ethoxylated primary alkyl amines the PNEC based on EPM (without correction for additional exposure via ingestion) of 1.71 mg/kd dw was in good agreement with PNEC based on two long term sediment toxicity data of 1.72 mg/kg dw.
