Justification for classification or non-classification

The registered UVCB substance Reaction products of 3-methylbutanal and 3-methylbut-3-en-1-ol, distillation overheads contains different constituents which were classified for skin irritation, serious eye damage or eye irritation and respiratory irritationaccording to Directive 67/548/EEC and Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008:

  • Isovaleraldehyde (0-20%, CAS 590-86-3): irritating to the eye (R 36, Eye Cat 2A) and irritating to the respiratory tract (R37, STOT SE Cat 3)
  • 3-Buten-1-ol, 3-methyl- (0-20%, CAS 763-32-6): “risk of serious damage to the eyes” (R41) and “irreversible effects on the eye” (Eye Cat 1)
  • Rose oxide (EC 939-429-1, used as read across for DHP1 0-20%, DHP2 0-20% and DHP3 0-40%): irritating to the eye (R 36, Eye Cat 2A) and irritating to the skin (R38, Skin Cat 2)
  • 2H-Pyran-4-ol, tetrahydro-4-methyl-2-(2-methylpropyl)- (0-50%, CAS 63500-71-0): irritating to the eye (R 36, Eye Cat 2A)

Therefore, a classification

  • with R37/38 and R41 according to Directive 1999/45/EG
  • and with Skin Irritation Category 2, Eye Damage Category 1, and STOT SE Category 3 according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008

is proposed for the registered UVCB substance Reaction products of 3-methylbutanal and 3-methylbut-3-en-1-ol, distillation overheads.
