Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Stability

Pthalic acid is considered to be stable towards hydrolysis.

An estimated half-life of 12.7 days in air was calculated with the AOP Program v1.91 of EPI-Suite. The experimentally determined half-life in sea water was 0.93 hours at 50°C.

Biodegradation

Phthalic acid is readily biodegradable with 74 % within 30 days. Biodegradation was confimed in a read across approach of phthalic anhydride which hydrolysed within seconds to phthalic acid. For phthalic anhydride the biodegradation was 85 % whithin 14 days.

Bioaccumulation

The estimated BCF of 3.16 indicates no affinity of phthalic acid for bioaccumulation.

Adsorption

The experimentally determined Koc was in a range of 2 -31, and hence no tendency for adsorption on soil is expected. Since the determination of the Koc was performed at different pH-values it is concluded that predication is valid even for the ionised substance.

Distribution The calculated Henry´s Law Constant was 2.21E-7 Pa m³/mole, therefore no potential to leave the aqueous phase is given. The distribution of phthalic acid in a "unit world" was calculated according to the Mackay fugacity model level I based on the physico-chemical properties. The main target compartment for phthalic acid is water of 99.9 %.
