Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not sensitising)
Additional information:

Dreist and Kolb (1993) studied skin sensitisation in female Bor:DHPW guinea pigs according to OECD Guideline 406 (guinea pig maximisation test). This study was reliable and is selected as key study. No other data on skin sensitisation were available.

The results of the study demonstrate that biphenyl is not a skin sensitiser.

Migrated from Short description of key information:
Biphenyl was observed not to be sensitising to skin in a guinea pig maximisation test with female Bor:DHPW guinea pigs performed according to OECD Guideline 406 and EU Method B6 (Dreist and Kolb, 1993).

Justification for selection of skin sensitisation endpoint:
Standard guideline study available

Respiratory sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no study available
Additional information:

Biphenyl is a solid with a low vapour pressure and is not a skin sensitiser. As such it is concluded that it is highly unlikely it would be a respiratory sensitiser.

Migrated from Short description of key information:
No data were available on respiratory sensitisation.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the available data and according to the CLP Regulation, biphenyl should not be classified for skin sensitisation.

No data were available on respiratory sensitisation.
