The available data on carcinogenicity of the test substance does not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 or Directive 67/548/EEC, and is therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification.
Additional information
Propylparaben was not genotoxic in several Ames tests and a HPRT test (Brusick, 1975; McCann et al., 1975; Wollny, 2012) and In vitro mammalian micronucleus Test (OECD 487, 2018). Moreover, there are studies available, investigating hyperplasia of the forestomach in rats and hamsters after treatment with propylparaben for 8 and 20 weeks, respectively. No hyperplasia was observed in any of the studies. In a subchronic study in rats and chronic studies in rats and dogs, no evidence for preneoplastic and neoplastic lesions were noted (Harlan, 2012; Matthews et al., 1956). Based on all available data, propylparaben is considered to have no carcinogenic potential.
