Triclosan is acutely very toxic to fish, aquatic invertebrates and algae.

Long-term effects are to be expected based on the available data.

Depending on local conditions and existing concentrations, disturbances in the biodegradation process of activated sludge are possible.

Additional information

The PNEC aqua freshwater and marine water have been derived using the sensitivity distribution method. Data from 34 longterm studies have been included in the SSD. The minimum species requirements are fulfilled: Longterm ecotoxicity data are available for fish, amphibians, crustacean, insects, Mollusca, algae, and higher plants with a total of 23 species covered. The PNEC aqua freshwater is estimated based on the pooled ecotoxicity data for fresh and marine water. As sufficient data are available for the relevant taxonomic groups (fish, amphibians, crustaceans, insects, molluscs, echinoderms, algae and higher plants) an assessment factor of 1 has been applied for the PNEC aqua freshwater (0.843 µg/L), while an additional assessment factor of 5 was applied for the PNEC aqua marine water (0.168 µg/L).

In activated sludge a respiration inhibition was detected at 11 mg Triclosan/l.
