- Endpoint:
- substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance does not contain metals or metalloids and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
- the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water

- substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period
- Interpretation of results:
- not classified based on GHS criteria
- Conclusions:
- The test item is not a flammable solid.
- Executive summary:
Based on the behavior of the test item at the UN test N.1, this solid substance must not be classified as flammable solid according to the CLP-regulation.
Referenceopen allclose all
The temperature of the solid test item and the temperature of the reference substance (graphite) do not differ until approx. 160 °C. At this point a slightly endothermic peak was observed followed by a larger endothermic event. Around 260 °C a very low exothermic event was recorded. Additional heating until 359 °C did not lead to a difference in the temperature profile of the test item and the reference substance.
The classification procedure for self-heating substances or mixtures does not need to be applied if the results of a screening test can be adequately correlated with the classification test and an appropriate safety margin is applied: The Grewer oven test (VDI guideline 2263, Part 1, 1990, Test methods for the Determination of the Safety Characteristics of Dusts) with an onset temperature 80 K above the reference temperature for a volume of 1 L.
This onset temperature is equal to or greater than 220 °C.
After ignition of the pile on the “left end” only local melting of the solid substance was observed. No distribution of a decomposition front was recorded.
Description of key information
Based on the behavior of the test item at the UN test N.1, this solid substance must not be classified as flammable solid according to the CLP-regulation.
The data of the Grewer oven test indicate, that the test item is not classified as self-heating substance according to the CLP-regulation.
The substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time and hence is not considered pyrophoric. Experience in production and handling shows, that the substance does not emit flammable gases in contact with water.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- not classified
