Description of key information
Appearance:
On the basis of physical observation and using the sense of smell, barium 3 -hydroxy-4 -[(4 -methyl-2 -sulfonatophenyl)diazenyl]-2 -naphthoate was observed to be a solid red powder.
Melting point:
The melting point determination of Barium 3-hydroxy-4-[(4-methyl-2-sulphonatophenyl)azo]- 2-naphthoate (CAS No. 17852-98-1) was done following OECD Guideline 102 and according to the metal block capillary method. The test was conducted in replicates and Mean decomposition temperature was determine to be 312.2-328.2°C at 970.8hPa.
Boiling Point:
The study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a solid which decomposes before boiling. The melting point determination of Test item Barium 3-hydroxy-4-[(4-methyl-2- sulphonatophenyl)azo]-2-naphthoate (CAS No. 17852-98-1 ) was done as per the test guideline OECD 102. The method followed was according to Capillary/metal block. The Mean decomposition temperature was determine to be 312.2 -328.2°C at 970.8 hPa.
Density:
The density of test item Barium 3-hydroxy-4-[(4-methyl-2-sulphonatophenyl)azo]-2-naphthoate (CAS No. 17852-98-1)was determined following OECD Guideline 109 and according to the Adapted from ASTM D854-02 using pyknometer. The meandensity of test item was determine to be 1.8108 g/cm³at 20°C and 971.4 hPa.
Particle size distribution:
The particle size distribution of test item Barium 3-hydroxy-4-[(4-methyl-2-sulphonatophenyl)azo]-2- naphthoate (CAS No. 17852-98-1 ) was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was determine to be in the range of 150 micron to 25 micron.
Vapour pressure:
The estimated vapour pressure of barium 3-hydroxy-4-[(4-methyl-2-sulfonatophenyl)diazenyl]-2-naphthoate at 25 deg C was 1.75E-16 Pa.
Partition coefficient
Based on the available data from modelling database EPI suite using the KOWWIN V1.68 programme, the partition coefficient (logPOW) of the test chemicalbarium 3 -hydroxy-4 -[(4 -methyl-2 -sulfonatophenyl)diazenyl]-2 -naphthoate was estimated to be 5.53. On the basis of this estimated value, substance barium 3 -hydroxy-4 -[(4 -methyl-2 -sulfonato phenyl)diazenyl]-2 -naphthoate can be considered to be hydrophobic in nature.
Water solubility:
The estimated water solubility of barium 3-hydroxy-4-[(4-methyl-2-sulfonatophenyl)diazenyl]-2-naphthoate at 25 deg C was 0.00107 mg/l.
Surface tension:
In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study need only be conducted if surface activity is a desired property of the chemical. Barium 3-hydroxy-4-[(4-methyl-2- sulphonatophenyl)azo]-2-naphthoate (CAS No. 17852-98-1) is used as a color in drugs and cosmetics.. For this use, surface activity is not an important property. Hence this study was considered for waiver.
Flash point:
The flash point determination of Barium 3-hydroxy-4-[(4-methyl-2-sulphonatophenyl)azo]-2-naphthoate (CAS No. 17852-98-1)was done following closed cup method using Pensky-Martens flash point apparatus. flash point was determine to be greater than 250 °C at 970.3hPa.
Auto flammability:
Barium 3-hydroxy-4-[(4-methyl-2-sulfonatophenyl)diazenyl]-2-naphthoate did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°C pressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that barium 3-hydroxy-4-[(4-methyl-2-sulfonatophenyl)diazenyl]-2-naphthoate is not auto-flammable.
Flammability:
Barium 3 -hydroxy-4 -[(4 -methyl-2 -sulfonatophenyl)diazenyl]-2 -naphthoate does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that barium 3 -hydroxy-4 -[(4 -methyl-2 -sulfonatophenyl)diazenyl]-2 -naphthoate is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus barium 3 -hydroxy-4 -[(4 -methyl-2 -sulfonatophenyl)diazenyl]-2 -naphthoate was considered non-flammable.
Explosiveness:
The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties.
Oxidizing properties:
The study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a solid.
pH:
The pH determination of test item Barium 3-hydroxy-4-[(4-methyl-2-sulphonatophenyl)azo]-2-naphthoate (CAS No 17852-98-1) was done following OECD guideline 122. pH of 1% w/v dispersion was measured with the help of pH meter and it was observed to be 9.80 at 24.4 °C.
