Description of key information

Low concern for acute toxicity to fish of 5-methoxy-2-methylsulphanilic acid based on predicted data and read-across with similar substance.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

No experimental data are available for acute toxicity to fish of 5-methoxy-2-methylsulphanilic acid.

An estimated value of LC50 fish 96h for 5-methoxy-2-methylsulphanilic acid has been calculated by ECOSAR V.1.11 and it is of none concern (LC50 fish 96 h= 2.24*e^5 mg/l).

The presumable absence of classification for acute toxicity regarding 5-methoxy-2-methylsulphanilic acid is supported by read-across with compound of similar structure, 4-aminotoluene-3-sulfonic acid. As reported in SIDS Dossier of 4-aminotoluene-3-sulfonic acid approved at SIAM 16 (27 -30 May 2003) with reference to Report No. EFA98002, Environment Agency, Japan (1999): unpublished report LC50 96h Oryzias latipes for 4-aminotoluene-3-sulfonic acid was greater than 10 mg/l. The test was conducted according to OECD TG203.

For justification of read-across see attachment document in section 13.
