Short-term toxicity to fish:
The highest concentration causing no mortality (no observed effect concentration, NOEC) after 96 hours was estimated to be 8.65 mg/L, whereas 100 % mortality was produced within 18 hours at about 31.2 mg/L. The LC50 (96 h) was estimated to be 18.85 mg/L.
The waiver included as separate endpoint study record further gives reference to an assessment made on altogether 28 organic peroxides demonstrating that among the three trophic levels, the alga proved to be the most sensitive species under short-term conditions to organic peroxides. In consequence, a new test on short-term toxicity to fish is not required.
Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:
The acute toxicity of tert-butyl peroxypivalate to invertebrates was assessed according to OECD guideline 202, EU method C.2 and OPPTS 850.1010. The 48-h EC50 value was determined as 6.99 mg/L, and the 48-h NOEC was determined to be 2.94 mg/L. The results are based on the measured geometric mean test item concentrations.
Long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:
Read-across to the structural analogue TBPIN (CAS 13122-18-4) was performed, as no study with the target substance is available.
The following results were obtained with the source test substance in a 21-day semi-static chronic toxicity test to Daphnia magna: NOEC value of 0.22 mg/L based on reproduction; LOEC value of 0.44 mg/L based on reproduction and EC50 and EC10 values 0.58 and 0.33, respectively, based on reproduction as well. The results were based on measured concentrations.
Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria:
The toxicity of tert-butyl peroxypivalate to algae was assessed according to OECD guideline 201, EU method C.3 and OPPTS 850.5400. The 72-h EC50 value based on growth rate was determined as 1.417 mg/L and based on yield was determined as 0.422 mg/L. The 72-h EC10 value based on growth rate was determined as 0.293 mg/L and based on yield was determined as 0.119 mg/L. The overall NOEC was determined to be 0.096 mg/L. The results are based on the measured geometric mean concentrations.
Toxicity to microorganisms:
Under the test conditions tert-butyl peroxypivalate does not show inhibition of the bacterial oxygen consumption up to 10 000 mg/L. Therefore, the EC10 of tert-butyl peroxypivalate was determined to be higher than 10 000 mg/L.
