There is chronic toxicity data on only one of the three constituents of this substance but the one that is likely to represent the most toxic component. The study does not however meet current requirements for this end point; it presents a NOEC but is only a 7 day study. QSAR data suggests that the toxicity decreases with increasing molecular weight and therefore that monoethylene glycol is likely to be the most toxic species. The QSAR does not include a specific class covering acetate salts but predicts that the same neutral organics class can be used as an alternative. The QSAR predicts that sodium acetate will be of similar toxicity to MEG, which confirms that the reliable measured data from MEG could be used as a conservative alternative to predict the overall toxicity of the substance. Overall, it is clear that all of the components present very low chronic toxicity. A weight of evidence approach suggest that a 28 day NOEC is likely to be well in excess of 1000mg/l. However, this end point is formally waived as it is not necessary to have data available for this end point to derive a PNEC and consequent RCRs that shows safe use.
