Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not sensitising)
Additional information:

Anthracene gave no evidence of a sensitisation potential in an early hypersensitisation assay with guinea pigs. The result is considered to be valid, as structure-related high-molecular PAHs (3-methylcholanthrene, BaP and 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene), which are known contact sensitisers, gave positive results, whereas no positive reaction was observed with phenanthrene, too.

However, care should be taken in the presence of sun light, since anthracene is phototoxic (see photo-induced skin irritation). The relevance of this property for a possible sensitisation is unclear.

Respiratory sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion

Migrated from Short description of key information:
Based on experimental evidence and occupational experience, no classification as to sensitisation required.
