Conclusions:
Study according to the guideline. Acute toxic effects could not be observed; the 96h-LC50 for silicic acid, zirconium salt, cadmium pigment encapsulated toxicity (survival) to Brachydanio rerio is >10,000 mg/L (dissolved fraction at a loading of 10,000 mg/L after 24 hours of stirring). This value will further be used in the chemical safety assessment. The corresponding LC0 is ≥ 10,000 mg/L (dissolved fraction at a loading of 10,000 mg/L after 24 hours of stirring) as well.

Description of key information

The results of a key study with Zirconium zircon with encapsulated cadmium selenium sulphide indicate a low potential for acute toxicity to fish. The respective 96h LC50 of Zirconium zircon with encapsulated cadmium selenium sulphide on freshwater fish (Danio rerio), obtained in a test according to OECD 203, is > 10,000 mg/L (dissolved fraction at a loading of 10,000 mg Zirconium zircon with encapsulated cadmium selenium sulphide/L after 24 h stirring). The corresponding 96h LC0 for acute effects of Zirconium zircon with encapsulated cadmium selenium sulphide was also estimated to be > 10,000 mg/L (Weyand, 2001). Nevertheless, read-across to the assessment entity soluble cadmium substances is applied since cadmium cations determine fate and toxicity in the environment.

Additional information

One reliable study (Klimisch 2) is availbale for the determination of acute toxicity of the pigment Zirconium zircon with encapsulated cadmium selenium sulphide is available. Freshwater 96h-LC50 and LC0 for the acute effect of the substance on Brachydanio rerio were determined to be >10000 mg/L (Weyand, 2001).
