Additional information

The toxicity of Triclosan to seedlings of ten plant species was investigated in a study following OECD guideline 208. The seedlings were planted in soil mixed with a quatz sand/substance mixture.Seedling growth, biomass, morphology and mortality were recorded. The most sensitive NOEC was determined in lettuce. Based on plant dry weight the NOEC was 74 mg/kg (Ciba Inc., 2010).

The influence of Triclosan on seedling emergence of Cucumis sativus and the phytotoxicity of the substance to the seedlings were tested according to guideline FDA TAD-4.07. Plant seeds were grown in natural soil (sandy-loam) and the number of seeds as well shoot length and dry weight were recorded. The test was run for 28 days. Based on seedling emergence a NOEC > 1 mg/kg soil was determined (Ciba-Geigy Corporation 1997). The study by Ciba Inc., (2010) was selected as key study due to testing of more species and resulting in well-defined effect values.
