Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Allantoin is a white powder at standard temperature and pressure, with a melting point of 229°C and a decomposition temperature of =>229°C. It has a density of 1.71 g/cm3 at 22°C and a low vapour pressure (<0.001 Pa at 20°C; QSAR). The substance is not classified as flammable on the basis of the result of the Brennzahl process (Brennzahl = 2). It does not self-ignite below 420°C, it is not explosive and it is not oxidising. The Mean Mass Median Aerodynamic Diameter of Allantoin was reported to be 8.8 µm. The inhalable fraction of the test material < 4 µm was 24.7 %, which would allow the test material to reach upper and lower regions of the respiratory tract.

Allantoin is considered to be water soluble (4.9 g/l at 20°C) and has a partition coefficient Log KOW of -2.26 at 20°C. The substance has a dissociation constant of pKa = 8.96, thus it can be anticipated that the test material can dissociate under environmentally relevant conditions.

Data on the physical properties of allantoin were obtained from a number of study reports conducted according to an OECD guideline or an appropriate national test method or were obtained from secondary sources. The data in these secondary sources are based on a critical evaluation of peer reviewed data. Therefore the selected values are considered to be reliable.
