Conclusion
As a results of the above tests and criteria, the test substance [trade name] comes under the classification of “Substances liable to spontaneous combustion, Self-heating substances, Packing Group II of Division 4.2”.
Results
In the preliminary screening test, the test flame was applied for over two minutes, after about 15 seconds an orange flame was observed. The test item propagated burning of a 200 length of the powder train in 362 seconds: the flame extinguished after 577s. The propagation of combustion occurred only partially.
The preliminary screening test was performed in duplicate and the similar observations were obtained in both test.
The sample labelled as [test item] should not be considered as readily flammable and no further burning rate test is required.
Conclusion
According to test method A.10, the sample labelled as [trade name] should not be considered as flammable.
Description of key information
Self-heating: Cat. 1 (UN Test N.4)
Non pyrophoric (UN Test N.1)
Not flammable (EU Method A.10)
Non flammable on contact with water
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
The substance was determined to be self-heating substance of category 1 in a test according to UN Test N.4.
The substance was determined to non pyrophoric in a test according to UN Test N.1.
The substance was determined to be non flammable on ignition by EU Method A.10.
Based on the chemical structure and experience in handling and use, flammability in contact with water is not expected.
Justification for classification or non-classification
The available data on flammability of the test substance do meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008: In the UN Test N.4 a temperature rise of > 60 °C was observed in a 100 mm sample cube and in a 25 mm sample tube at 140 °C and therefore the substance has to be classified as self-heating substance category 1.
The substance did not spontaneous ignite within 5 minutes when poured from about 1 m height onto a non-combustible surface in the UN Test N.2 and is therefore not a pyrophoric solid.
The substance propagated burning of a 200 mm length of the powder train in 362 seconds in a preliminary screening test according EU Method A.10. Therefore the substance is not be classified as a flammable solid.
The available data on flammability of the test substance do not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008, and are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification.
Based on chemical structure and experience in handling and use, flammability on contact with water is not expected.
